Life-Saving Bariatric Surgery at Affordable Prices
There was hardly a night when Sonia didn’t awaken from the same bad dream. Her weight was out of control and she was growing to human-mountain proportions. Regretfully, her anxieties didn’t reduce that much when she was awake. Sonia was a woman with a problem. Her doctors warned her that she was “morbidly obese,” a term that meant she could die at any time from a number of maladies that were more likely for overweight individuals.
Despite the seriousness of her obesity, her doctors hadn’t really been of much help. Other than suggesting she needed to control her eating and exercise more, they offered no solutions. But it wasn’t that simple. It seemed like anytime she dieted and actually lost weight, within a few months it returned with a vengeance, and exercise often had the side effect of increasing her appetite. Even the nutritionist she paid for out of her own pocket did little other than hand her lists of restrictions that had already proven unsuccessful for her in the past.
Finally a friend suggested that Sonia should look into bariatric surgery. As much as she hated the idea of surgery, Sonia realized that bariatric surgery might represent her last best hope of regaining control over her weight and health. Although her insurance wouldn’t pay for it—they considered this an experimental surgery—she had a small inheritance, and if she was careful, she could afford it. It wasn’t really how she wanted to spend the money, but it was better than dying an early death.
Very early in her search for a good surgical team. Sonia realized that Mexico offered her the best medical tourism options and an affordable solution. She just had one question: should she bring her eighteen-year-old niece Samantha with her? It would cost a fair amount more to bring her. On one hand, Samantha spoke a little Spanish. On the other, Sonia found it difficult to imagine that the young woman would want to just hang around the hospital over the week she’d need to recover, so if it wasn’t necessary, why bring her? It wasn’t going to be a vacation after all.
If Sonia had had a copy of The English Speaker’s Guide to Medical Care in Mexico, the answer would have been clear. There are important medical and cultural differences between Mexico and the other countries in North America. The right things to do in Mexico aren’t always obvious. In this case, the section about preparing for hospitalization would have answered her question and clarified the answer. Plus it would have provided additional information Sonia might not have known about to ask.
